  3. Sleeve Gastrectomy
  4. Gastric Bypass

1. Lap-Band Surgery is a relatively safe and completely reversible procedure used for weight loss in moderate to severely obese patients. The LAP-BAND® Gastric Banding System procedure requires just one small incision through the umbilicus (your belly button). This ensures that there is almost no trace of the minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure. During the procedure, a band is placed across the upper portion of the stomach. The band is adjustable and also reversible (meaning the band can be removed). The surgery required to place the band involves only minimal incisions and therefore is a much less invasive and safer procedure than other weight loss surgery procedures, such as gastric bypass. Single Incision Lap-Band Surgery Video [2:19]

The LAP-BAND® System surgery is the procedure of choice for most patients who are candidates for weight loss surgery.

2. Orbera Gastric Balloon: Orbera™ has a 20-year history of clinical experience as a successful non-surgical weight loss solution Orbera is a 2-part weight loss system, that starts with placing a soft gastric balloon in your stomach to encourage portion control, and a one-year coaching program to help you keep the weight off. Orbera is a weight-loss system, which uses an intra-gastric balloon that occupies space in the stomach. The balloon is placed into the stomach through the mouth, using a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, while the patient is under mild sedation. Once in place, the balloon is filled with salt water (saline) so that it expands into a spherical shape. The ORBERA Intragastric Balloon System takes up space in the stomach to help patients lose weight. The system is temporary and should be removed after 6 months. The Orbera™ System surgery is the procedure of choice for most patients who are candidates for non-surgical weight loss procedures.

3. Sleeve Gastrectomy removes a large portion of the stomach laparoscopically, through six small incisions in the abdomen. What is left behind is roughly the size of a banana. This helps patients lose weight by limiting the capacity of their stomach. This surgery is irreversible, and involves cutting and stapling of the stomach.

In addition, the upper part of the stomach is removed, which is the primary source of Ghrelin, the body’s hunger-producing hormone. By removing this part of the stomach, Ghrelin production is drastically reduced, resulting in less hunger. However, enthusiasm for this procedure must be tempered by the fact that the operation is relatively new and has not been studied yet for possible long-term complications. Sleeve Gastrectomy Video [1:55]

4. Gastric Bypass Surgery is the original surgery for weight loss and has been around for more than 50-years. Therefore, it is the most extensively researched of all the bariatric surgeries. It can be a safe and effective surgery for the treatment of severe obesity in selected patients. This surgery is irreversible, and involves cutting and stapling of the stomach and small intestines: Gastric Bypass Video [1:33]

A gastric bypass is performed laparoscopically through six small incisions in the abdomen. The capacity of the stomach is surgically reduced to about the size of an egg, which alters the way nutrients are absorbed. Then the small intestines are rerouted to maximize their digestive capacity. The majority of the stomach and some of the upper intestine are now “bypassed”. In these areas, the food no longer mixes with digestive enzymes and therefore cannot be absorbed into the bloodstream. Consequently, those whom have a gastric bypass take in far fewer calories.

The effects of a weight loss procedure combined with our instruction and guidance will help you to change not only the way you eat, but even the very nature of your “relationship” with food, which will help you to remain at a healthy weight for life. You will also experience a dramatic improvement in your health and activity. Effective long term weight management often puts an end to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, acid reflux, back and joint pain and even Type II Diabetes.

Obesity is a leading cause of preventable death. It occurs when more calories are consumed than are needed. The excess is stored as fat. Obesity is a common and serious health problem that causes and contributes to many medical conditions.

Conservative medical treatments of diet, exercise, medication for appetite suppression, behavior modification and psychological counseling should always be tried first. Minimally invasive surgery and balloon procedures should be considered as an option for weight loss when conservative treatments alone have failed.

Prospective patients will learn details of the procedure including benefits, risks and expected results. In addition you will have an opportunity to have any of your questions answered and to interact with patients who have undergone the procedure. A variety of free educational materials are available at our seminars. Please feel free to bring friends or family members. This is an excellent educational experience for any prospective patient. Parking is free.
